Earning money is the number one financial topic on the mind of almost every child. The most popular surveys on Kids' Money are Making Money and Babysitting. Our most popular page is the Making Money page for Kids. Almost all the emails and Comments we receive from children ask how they can make money. Kids want to start earning money at the youngest possible age and are often frustrated by the lack of opportunities to do so.
Parents are in a unique position to introduce their kids to the concept of working for pay and to teach them what it takes to do a good job. Most experts recommend parents not use money as an incentive for kids to do their chores. At the same time, many household jobs (not considered chores) provide the first and best opportunity for kids to earn money.
As children grow older, neighbors and friends of their parents can provide working opportunities. Depending on the parent’s profession, kids may also be able to help filing, entering information into the computer or other age-appropriate tasks. Within the confines of state and federal laws and whatever rules parents set, kids in their pre-teen years may be able to start part-time employment.
Be sure to have your kids check out our Making Money Survey for possible jobs and money-making opportunities and and Babysitting Survey for tips on making money babysitting. Add Earning money to your list of financial topics to teach your kids.
